they connected at age 17 during Basile’s study abroad in the US and remained friends ever since. They shared updates over the years, staying in touch across the many phases of each other’s lives, never knowing what the future held in store…
Finally, after more than half a lifetime of friendship, and 25 years after first meeting, they began a relationship, and the rest is history. As they say, good things take time… and great things take a couple of decades!
Basile and Katherine first met when they were only eight years old! And in Switzerland, at a wedding! Life has a funny way of coming full-circle.
Here is Katherine in the white sweater, and Basile in the black coat. At the time, neither spoke each other’s language, but they remember each other playing soccer on that peaceful summer day in 1997.
As a proud Gruyerian, this is the only cheese Basile formally recognizes, but some other popular ones are: Gruyère d’alpage, Gruyère mild, Gruyère salé, Gruyère surchoix.
Cheeses
All Swiss households have a tabletop raclette grill. You heat the cheese, which comes in many pre-cut types, then pour it over potatoes, cornichons, onions, and for the truly wild, pineapple.
Raclette
The best is “Moitié-Moitié” meaning half-half: half Vacherin, half Gruyère.
Fondue
Potatoes are the base, with vegetables, fried egg, bacon or veal, and onions on top. Amazing!

The best present Katherine and Basile can ask for is that you share in their joy. Thank you for making the trip from near and far to be a part of this special weekend! If you are considering a gift, a contribution to their new life together in Switzerland would be truly appreciated.
